A few weeks ago we leaped off a cliff and held our first ever book group via webinar. Seth Godin’s new book, Linchpin, was our jumping off point. As promised, it was raw, exciting and fun. OK, candidly, everyone had a great time, but we were sweating bullets because the conversation was far more rapid fire than we’d anticipated: the questions and comments and answers (and more comments) were flying. We even ended up with a fun overflow conversation on our Oneicity Facebook page. The prevailing opinion was that we should do more and call them: “The Oneicity Unbook Group.”
So we listened and learned and are doing it again.
Next Tuesday, April 13th, 1:00 to 2:00 PM PST the Oneicity Unbook Group returns. The book we’re discussing is Rework by the smart guys over at 37 Signals. We use several software tools from 37 Signals but more importantly, we like the way they think about work.
Rework has much to say about the best ways to work and create great product. If you serve an NPO or ministry, you’ll find the discussion fascinating. Taking the best ideas of how to work in the for-profit world and applying them to the your world is both energizing and invigorating. Plus, you’ll meet some cool, sharp people who’ll be on the webinar with you.
If you’re someone who needs to get stuff done, then you’ll enjoy the discussion on Rework. Ideas like: “Planning is Guessing,” “Meetings are Toxic” and “ASAP is Poison” are just a few of the startling and freeing concepts in the book.
Don’t worry about reading the book. That’s part of the fun. We’ll read it for you. Then talk about it. Discuss it with you. Answer your questions. After all that, you can decide if you want to read it yourself. That’s the Unbook Group, crazy but it works. And if this time is like last time, the chat discussion had some of the best interactions and entertainment!
Oneicity will host the call plus we’ve enlisted the help of our good friend, Brad Shantz. Brad’s a real-deal strategic thinker and one of the guys we like to think with. Brad’s bio reads like this:
“Brad is currently working in the Product Management team for the Business Platform Division at Microsoft, and has 22+ years experience in the software industry, having led projects and divisions across multiple industries. He has also taught courses on computer programming at the University level, as well as leadership and business courses around the United States.”
Don’t be put off by all that “computer” and “programming” talk. Brad knows about getting things done, with computers and more importantly with people. We’re glad we could catch Brad when he could spare some time for our group.
There will be the usual cast of Oneicity team members on the call, including Jeff Smith, who led our last unbook group. As always, there will be no shortage of great conversation.
The good news is that technology will be smoother this time. Sica, our administrative guru, will handle running audio and video while we’ll field questions and the chat room. Plus, by popular demand, the chat will be open for 30 minutes after the end of the webinar to allow for the conversations to continue.
